A new release from Italian dub artists Mellow Mood and Paolo Baldini, 7 Dub has become an instant favorite of mine. The album is an absolute engineering masterpiece—Baldini strips Mellow Mood’s album 7 down to its bare essentials, interweaving analog tape delays and the classic Space Echo to create a drippy, hypnotic sonic rhythm.

Listen with headphones to fully appreciate the weight of the deep dub basslines. Oh, and they have vinyl on their Bandcamp! I’m eagerly awaiting mine.

There is no better way to kick off this series than with one of my all-time favorite albums: Pushing Through the Pavement by The Polish Ambassador. Released in June 2014 on Jumpsuit Records, this was one of the formative albums that taught me how to interact with music in a new way and defined my musical taste for years to come.

At the time, The Polish Ambassador’s music was undergoing a stylistic shift, moving away from a glitch-hop, 8-bit sound and beginning to incorporate more rhythms, beat structures, and instruments from global genres. The shift started with 2013’s album, Ecozoic, which began incorporating smoother downtempo rhythms and lush synthesizer textures. The listening experience shifted from a technical, Tron-esque sonic journey to a heady, immersive oasis. If Ecozoic was the discovery, Pushing Through the Pavement was the arrival, a full maturation of this sonic shift.

I consider this a ‘no-skips’ album, where all fourteen tracks contribute a necessary facet to what I can only describe as a lush, sonic jungle. For all the track-by-track breakdowns, I listen in order as the artist intended. Below is my track breakdown followed by some overall thoughts on this album.

Track-By-Track Breakdown

Vision Fiberoptics (feat. Sean Haefeli)

The xylophone sets the tone for the type of instrumentation to expect going forward. The synths carry the stylistic feel of Ecozoic into this album, creating a seamless bridge from record to record. The choice of percussion and the use of a wood block / hand clap on the beat creates space for the vocals to live, giving clarity without creating mud. The vocal doubling and layered delay give the performance a really pleasing, spatial feel.

Let The Rhythm Just (feat. Mr. Lif and Ayla Nereo)

Driven heavily by its vocal dynamics, the verses rapped by Mr. Lif capture the spirit of Thievery Corporation and The Perceptionists, full of clever wordplay and internal rhyming. Ayla Nereo reprises her partnership with TPA on the chorus, her airy vocals soaring directly above the more grounded tones of Mr. Lif. Throughout the track, a fun, organic flute motif runs alongside the groove, perfectly complementing Lif’s delivery. The interplay between Lif’s rhythmic weight and Nereo’s soaring vocal space highlights a chemistry that would later expand into their full-length 2015 collaborative project, Terra Bella.

Prayer for Rain (feat. Ryan Herr & Lizzy Plotkin)

Immediately slows the album’s tempo down with acoustic Spanish guitar and lush strings, offering a refreshing, organic contrast to the sonically heavy drive of the first two tracks. The violin leads the way throughout the arrangement, sitting precisely in the upper-mid frequencies so it cuts cleanly through the mix and hovers right at the tip of the ear. A gooey, reggae-inspired one-drop beat accents the three while leaving the first beat empty, creating a buoyant, fluid rhythm that feels like drifting down a river.

Gathering of the Tribes (feat. saQi)

Following the laidback acoustics of “Prayer for Rain,” the tempo immediately surges back up, re-establishing the album’s driving electronic momentum. The arrangement builds intense sonic pressure through layered horn swells, creating a dynamic anticipation right before the main beat drops. Relies on the principles of tension and release, balancing a relentless, pounding low-end beat with saQi’s fluid, wandering trumpet lines acting as the emotional release.

Forever Lost (feat. Lafa Taylor)

Collaborating with long-time West Coast MC and beatboxer Lafa Taylor, The Polish Ambassador mellows out the tempo with a relaxed, reggae-inspired beat that gives the vocals plenty of pocket. Following the intense brass and heavy electronic drive of the previous tracks, the album shifts back into an accessible, ska-inflected groove. The buoyant rhythm and memorable vocal hook make this one of the most approachable, head-nodding tracks on the record’s first half.

Sri Gurvastakam (feat. Sarasvati Dasi)

Composed in the 17th century by the scholar Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, Sri Gurvastakam is a sacred Sanskrit hymn that likens a spiritual teacher to a cooling raincloud that quenches the inner fires of human suffering. Opening with handpan and lush strings alongside chanting vocalizations, the arrangement creates a timeless, ethereal atmosphere before building out with subtle guitar accents. The delicate use of vocal doubling elevates Sarasvati Dasi’s performance, giving her Sanskrit chanting a shimmering, multi-dimensional quality that sits cleanly in the upper frequencies. There is a fascinating irony in how the track operates: while most listeners may never know its deep 17th-century devotional origins, the production translates that ancient, reverent weight into an accessible, hypnotic piece to get lost in.

Wait for the One That’s Special (feat. Sean Haefeli)

Immediately grabs attention with a crisp, syncopated drum groove paired with sharp, staccato horn stabs that set the track’s bouncy neo-soul foundation. Sean Haefeli’s smooth, sustained vocal performance offers a striking textural contrast to the tight, percussive punch of the rhythm section underneath. The dynamic interplay between the flute embellishments and warm horn lines between verses offers a lush melodic breather, inviting the listener to fully immerse themselves in the track’s organic texture.

Rise and Release (feat. Raashan Ahmad)

Continuing the album’s strong lineage of hip-hop collaborations, TPA pairs up with conscious rap veteran Raashan Ahmad for a track built on optimism and uplift. Raashan Ahmad brings the smooth, rhythmic flow honed during his time fronting Crown City Rockers, riding TPA’s groove with effortless charisma. The seamless blend of golden-era boom-bap aesthetics and modern electronic production creates one of the most head-nodding, accessible tracks on the album.

Koyelia (feat. Peia)

Peia’s vocals are sung in Hindi, centered around the traditional phrase “Koyelia bole,” which translates to “the cuckoo bird sings.” The vocals build to a beautiful crescendo of brass and horns that feels like pure ecstasy. In the final minute, a cathartic joy takes over as the chorus and horns mix together in a delightful wash of sound.

The Juiceman Cometh (feat. saQi)

A funky bassline and snappy vocal chops grab immediate attention right at the start of the track. Soon after, saQi’s trumpet enters to paint bright strokes across the sonic palette, leading into a standout trumpet break that highlights his multi-instrumental prowess. The multi-part brass mix in the track’s second half builds a superb mini-crescendo, cascading effortlessly back into the driving vocal chop.

Driven by a dub-reggae beat, deep bass, and Ryan Herr’s acoustic guitar, the track opens with a warm, gentle invitation. That calm gives way as the punch of saQi’s trumpet kicks in, making it virtually impossible not to move your body. The mix creates discrete spatial pockets for both the brass and the guitar, ensuring Herr and saQi never crowd one another, but instead complement each other melodically.

Lost & Found (feat. Mr. Lif & Ayla Nereo)

The track opens with a hypnotic blend of percussion and flute that transfixes the listener from the start. Stands as a top-tier collaboration among Mr. Lif, Ayla Nereo, and The Polish Ambassador, balancing Lif’s grounded lyrical flow against Nereo’s soaring harmonies. Underneath that vocal synergy, the narrative of wandering in search of home taps into a universal human experience, adding to the album’s timeless quality.

Ritual Revival

Driven by deep drums, a pounding bassline, and relentless percussion, the track immediately taps into pure primal instinct. As the horns and vocal textures enter, they unleash a cascade of energy that completely washes away the reflective structure of the previous track. The shift in tempo is palpable. The way the horns blare out over the beat asks the listener to completely surrender and dance.

Nobody’s Alone (feat. Yarah Bravo)

Featuring vocals from One Self’s Yarah Bravo, this track serves as a comforting palette cleanser. The bass line feels warm and nostalgically familiar, while the horns and synth leads subtly call back to melodic progressions heard earlier on the album. Yarah’s delivery layers a bright, energetic presence over the syncopated beat, offering a fresh contrast against the familiar backdrop. Her superb use of internal rhyme acts as an extra layer of percussion, weaving seamlessly with the rhythm to keep you moving.

The Polish Ambassador explicitly proves artist’s aren’t locked into any one genre with Pushing Through The Pavement. There are nostalgic nods to where he has been and where he aspires to be layered through out the album. This particular album cycle, which I define as beginning with Ecozoic (2012) and ending with Twilight Safari (2018), was a stylistic period of experimentation, incorporating everything from dub-reggae beats to lush Indian and Middle Eastern instrumentation. Branching off from this album cycle came collaborative albums with Mr. Lif & Ayla Nereo (Terra Bella (2015)) and Sean Haefeli (Lush Dubington (2021)). Probably the most well known collaborative project from this time was WIldlight, between The Polish Ambassador & Ayla Nereo. There was even, for a short period, a live full band touring under the moniker The Polish Ambassador & The Diplomatic Scandal.

I first found The Polish Ambassador’s music through a YouTube video on flow arts (which I could write a whole separate article about). The song was Heartbeat Amplifier off Ecozoic. I was absolutely mesmerized by how a track could seemingly pull me out of space and time in a way that felt simultaneously meditative and cathartic. Ecozoic made me feel like I could see colors and hear sounds, releasing a primitive urge for kinetic motion. Pushing Through The Pavement gave me the sonic tools and vocabulary to better define what would become the foundation for my listening preferences for the next 12 years. I still spin this album non-stop and allow the beats to carry me away.

The Soundscape

If you are looking for a singular, rigid genre box, you won’t find it here. This space lives in the subterranean intersections of underground electronic music and sound-system culture. While we will map out a massive amount of sonic territory, our writing and curation will frequently anchor themselves around two distinct worlds that showcase exactly what this music is capable of:

On one end is the precise, meticulous engineering of French Dub and Stepper. Built for custom, towering sound systems, this music is defined by driving rhythms, razor-sharp digital delays, and an absolute mastery of space and echo. It is production craft at its most deliberate, where every rimshot and baseline air-gap serves a purpose.

On the other end is the organic, soulful space of Sacred Bass. This sound moves away from the cold machine and looks toward the earth, balancing heavy, physical sub-bass foundations with rich texturing, acoustic instrumentation, and vast, atmospheric space.

On paper, they seem distinct. In practice, they are bound by the same rule: they are crafted with true intention, prioritizing depth and texture over mass appeal.

A Quick Teaser: What’s Spinning
